Motor Broom Operator (Street Transportation Department) - Phoenix Arizona

The Street Transportation Department ensures the safe, efficient, and convenient movement of people and goods throughout the city. The department supports citywide infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life in Phoenix. The goal is to provide a safe and sustainable transportation network and deliver infrastructure services through a dedicated and forward-thinking workforce that addresses the changing needs of the city. 

The Motor Broom Operator in the Street Maintenance Division operates heavy-duty, motorized street sweeping equipment to clean the surfaces of City streets. Work includes performing routine preventative maintenance, servicing vehicles, making minor running repairs on vehicles, and assisting with the right-of-way crew. The primary assignment for this vacancy is with the Street Cleaning Crew. Work is performed under the supervision of a Street Maintenance Foreman II, who periodically inspects work for compliance with safety standards and efficiency of operation. This position will work out of various service centers throughout Phoenix.

Shifts available are: 

• Monday through Thursday, 3:30 AM-2:00 PM 
• Tuesday through Friday, 3:30 AM-2:00 PM 

Shift differential pay is available for hours worked during nights and weekends. Following a review of applications, only those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will receive an email invitation to participate in the skills assessment. This assessment includes both a comprehensive CDL vehicle inspection and a Motor Broom equipment skills assessment.

Ability to: 

• Operate motor broom in a skillful and safe manner according to applicable traffic laws.

Pay Range: $25.43 to $34.08 per hour.

Hiring Range: $25.43 to $32.46 per hour.

Pay Range Explanation:

• Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
• Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 141. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

• Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
• Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
• Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
• When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

• Class A or B Commercial Driver License.
• 92 documented hours on heavy-duty, motorized street sweeping equipment.
  • OR (2) be qualified for "out-of-class" pay on similar equipment.
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working conditions and requirements:

• As a condition of continued employment, employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing, as mandated by law.
• Employees may be required to work irregular hours, including second and third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings. 
• This position may involve moving objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. 
• Employees will be working on City streets, close to vehicular traffic. 
• The job requires outdoor work in various environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Must be able to perform CDL 7 Step Airbrake and pre and post trip inspection. 

Experience with/in:

• Reading and following electronic maps, paper route maps, and GIS/GPS location devices. 
• Minor adjustments/repair of motor brooms.
